I've spent the last eight years managing materials purchasing for a small injection molding and fabrication shop—about 90 people and a materials budget that I'll describe as more than my boss likes to admit. Officially, I'm a procurement manager. In practice, I'm the person who gets called after someone has already bought the wrong material. This FAQ covers the questions I get asked most in this industry: what SMC plastic is, whether SMC body filler matters, where nylon fibers fit in molded plastics, what a PVC board 2x4 actually is, and how to bond polyethylene without wasting money.

What is SMC plastic?
SMC stands for Sheet Molding Compound. It's basically a sheet of fiber-reinforced thermoset plastic: a mixture of unsaturated polyester resin, chopped glass fibers, mineral fillers, and curing agents. You cut the sheet into a charge, place it in a heated compression mold, and press. The material flows, cures, and comes out as a rigid composite part.
The British Plastics Federation describes SMC as a glass-fibre reinforced polyester material used for molding strong, lightweight components (bpf.co.uk). Typical applications include automotive body panels, electrical enclosures, truck components, and structural trays.
From a cost perspective, the thing that surprises most people is that the resin is not the main driver. Tooling is. A compression mold for a moderately sized SMC part can run anywhere from $15,000 to $60,000 depending on steel quality and geometry. You get that back in volume and fast cycles, not from the material price alone.
Also, unlike nylon or PVC, SMC is thermoset. Once it cures, you can't reheat and reshape it. That gives the part excellent dimensional stability, but it also means SMC scrap is true waste. If you are getting a quote, ask about scrap allowance and mold trial costs up front.
What is SMC body filler, and can regular filler work on SMC panels?
SMC body filler is a polyester-based repair compound made specifically for SMC and fiberglass. It has lower shrinkage and a bit more flexibility than standard body filler, which matters because SMC panels move and flex more than steel.
I learned this from an expensive repair job in 2023. A shop used regular body filler on an SMC truck corner panel. It looked perfect for about a month. Then hairline cracks appeared right where the patch ended. The redo cost more than the original repair, and the shop had to buy SMC-specific filler anyway (ugh).
So if someone asks whether SMC body filler is the same as regular filler, the answer is no. Standard automotive body filler is formulated for steel panels. For an SMC part, buy a filler that says SMC-compatible or fiberglass-compatible. If the supplier can't explain the difference, treat that as a red flag.
Nylon fibers: do they have a place in plastic molding?
The short answer: yes, but usually not in SMC. My honest answer: ask for data before believing the label.
Nylon fibers are synthetic polyamide fibers. In plastics and rubber compounds, they are used to improve abrasion resistance, impact toughness, and sliding wear. You find them in thermoplastic composites, brush bristles, and some industrial rubber goods.
In SMC, the dominant reinforcement is chopped glass. Glass provides stiffness at a reasonable cost. Nylon fibers are more expensive, less stiff, and they absorb moisture. Moisture can hurt the electrical properties and surface finish of a molded SMC part. So if someone quotes you a nylon-fiber-reinforced SMC without real test data, I would ask a lot of questions.
That said, nylon fibers can be valuable in thermoplastics. I've specified them for a sliding wear component where glass-filled nylon was too abrasive on the mating part. It worked well. But that was a thermoplastic application, not a thermoset SMC. Different chemistry, different priorities.
PVC board 2x4: what are you actually buying?
Search 'PVC board 2x4' and you will usually see expanded PVC foam board cut to 2 feet by 4 feet. It is not a wooden two-by-four. Expanded PVC is a closed-cell foam board with smooth, rigid surfaces. It resists moisture, cuts easily, and doesn't rot. That's why it's used for signage, displays, cabinet panels, and outdoor trim.
A 2x4 panel is kind of a sweet spot for small projects. A full 4x8 sheet of 1/2-inch expanded PVC is awkward, heavy, and easy to scratch during handling. If you only need a few square feet, a 2x4 panel costs less and ships in normal packaging.
On pricing, I saw 1/2-inch white 2x4 expanded PVC panels quoted around $28-$45 per panel from two online plastics suppliers in early 2025. High-density board, color, and thickness add cost. And because PVC resin prices move, always verify the current number before you commit.
One warning: sometimes 'PVC board' refers to cellular PVC trim lumber, like a 1x4 or 2x4 board for exterior trim. That is a completely different product. Check dimensions, density, and the product photo. I've been burned once by assuming, and it cost a restocking fee.
Best adhesive for polyethylene plastic (and why most glues fail)
Polyethylene is cheap, tough, and almost impossible to glue with ordinary adhesives. The reason is its low surface energy. Most epoxies and super glues cannot form a strong chemical bond, so the adhesive sticks to the PE for a while and then lets go.
For a reliable bond, you basically have two options. First, a two-part acrylic adhesive designed for polyolefins. These are often labeled for polyethylene and polypropylene. They cost more, but they are the closest thing to a direct answer to 'best adhesive for polyethylene plastic.' Second, surface treatment plus a structural adhesive. Flame, corona, or plasma treatment raises the surface energy enough for a standard epoxy to work. That is more of a production-line solution.
I tested both approaches on HDPE mounting blocks in our shop. The budget epoxy failed at about 20 pounds of pull. A polyolefin-specific acrylic held past 70 pounds and tore the plastic before the bond line. The acrylic cost roughly three times more per kit, but the cost per successful joint was lower. No re-dos, no callbacks.
If you are designing a permanent joint, don't forget mechanical fasteners. Sometimes the best adhesive for polyethylene is a well-placed screw or a threaded insert. It may not be elegant, but it is predictable. In procurement, predictable beats poetic.
Why are SMC quotes so different? What should you ask before signing?
SMC quotes for the same part can vary by more than 30% in my files. That isn't always someone trying to trick you. Often it comes down to assumptions: glass content, scrap rate, mold trial charges, surface coating, or freight. One supplier assumes 5% scrap; another assumes 12%. Same part, different total cost.
Two questions I ask on every SMC RFQ:
- Are we all quoting the same specification, including glass content, resin type, color, and surface finish?
- What exactly is included? Mold trials, setup, packaging, freight?
Transparent pricing is worth a bit more per unit. If a supplier lists all fees upfront, the final invoice usually matches the quote. If a supplier quotes a low number and then adds charges after, the 'savings' disappear quickly. I'd rather sign a slightly higher contract with no surprises than chase hidden fees under a separate line item.
The conventional wisdom in purchasing is: always get three quotes. After tracking hundreds of purchase orders, I'd revise that slightly: get three quotes, then evaluate which quote has the least fine print. A transparent quote that looks 5% higher often ends up costing less.
