SMC x PVC, Nylon Strainers, Nylon Rods, and Polypropylene: A Buyer's Guide

If you've ever been the person in the office who has to “just order a plastic part,” you already know the request is rarely as simple as it sounds. I've been managing purchasing for a mid-sized industrial services company since 2020. I'm not a materials engineer. I'm the one who translates “we need something that won't melt” into a purchase order.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: there is no single right material. SMC, PVC, nylon, and polypropylene all fall under “plastic,” but they're different categories with different tradeoffs. The right answer depends on whether you need a standard part quickly, a custom structural part, or a material with a clear end-of-life story. I've started thinking of it as three scenarios. (Should mention: this took me a long time to learn.)

Scenario 1: You Need a Standard Part Fast — Stock Shapes and Catalog Items

Most maintenance and replacement orders land here. The request is “same as what's on the pump” or “we need a spare strainer before Friday.” For my company, that often means nylon strainers or nylon rods. They're not glamorous, but they're why the shop keeps running.

Nylon strainers show up in filtration and fluid handling. When I order them, the specs that matter are mesh size, housing diameter, connection type, and working temperature. If you're replacing a branded part, include the old part number and a photo if possible. I don't have hard data on how often wrong strainers get ordered, but based on our purchase history, a part number is the single best way to avoid a costly mismatch.

When you order nylon rods, don't stop at length and diameter. You also need the grade. In my first year, I made the classic specification error: I asked for “nylon” and assumed the shop would know it needed PA66. The parts were cut from PA6. That was a $600 redo. According to ISO 1043-1 (iso.org), PA is the abbreviation for polyamide. PA6 and PA66 are not the same material, and for some applications they're not interchangeable. Nylon also absorbs moisture, so if the part is machined to tight tolerances, the environment matters too.

If your supplier publishes an SMC products catalog, this is the first place to look. A catalog part usually ships faster and costs less than a custom order because no tooling is involved. If you need a standard size, don't ask for custom molding. If you need something that only resembles a catalog part, don't assume it will work — that's scenario 2.

This is also where I learned to pay for certainty. In March 2024, we paid $400 extra for guaranteed delivery of a replacement nylon strainer. The alternative was a pump outage billed at $15,000 per day. The rush fee wasn't about speed; it was about not having to wonder. They delivered on time. (Should mention: we'd built in a 3-day buffer.) Honestly, I'm not sure why rush premiums vary so wildly between vendors. My best guess is some quote a standard expedite fee and others just make one up. Either way, in an emergency, a guaranteed date is worth the price.

“Probably on time” is a risk, not a schedule.

Scenario 2: You Need a Custom Shape or Structural Performance — SMC x PVC

This is where things get interesting. Someone sends a drawing and asks for a cover, housing, bracket, or panel. The phrase “or something similar” is a red flag. Now you're comparing materials, not just prices.

SMC, by the way, is sheet molding compound: a glass-reinforced thermoset polyester molded under heat and pressure. It's stiff, strong, and handles heat well. The long way to say that is thermoset composite. The short way is: don't treat it like a simple thermoplastic.

One search term we see a lot is “SMC x PVC.” Usually someone means SMC vs. PVC. They're not direct substitutes. PVC is a thermoplastic, so it's easier to extrude, cut, weld, and solvent-bond. It also has good chemical resistance and a lower entry price for simple profiles. SMC offers better stiffness, dimensional stability, and heat resistance for complex geometries. If I need a duct or pipe, PVC fabrication is often the practical route. If I need a load-bearing enclosure that must hold its shape in a hot environment, SMC is usually the better candidate.

The pain point is tooling. A custom SMC part needs a mold, and that means money and lead time. We waited four weeks for a quote once — or rather, closer to five when you count the revision cycle. The mold itself took about nine weeks (note to self: verify current lead times before promising anyone). If your volume doesn't justify the tooling cost, ask the supplier whether an existing SMC products catalog can be adapted. Sometimes a standard part is good enough. Sometimes it isn't. Don't force a catalog part into a structural application just to save a few thousand dollars in tooling.

We didn't have a formal approval chain for custom tooling until 2022. Cost us when a $5,000 mold deposit was approved by someone who wasn't authorized. Now every custom part order needs at least two signatures: one from engineering, one from finance.

According to ASTM D4066 (astm.org), nylon materials are classified by grade and property profile. That matters because parts that look identical can have different mechanical limits. The same logic applies to SMC and PVC — don't substitute based on color or surface finish. Ask about temperature, load, chemical exposure, and UV. A part that sits in a dry factory has different requirements than one on a rooftop.

Scenario 3: You Have Sustainability or End-of-Life Requirements — Polypropylene Is Recyclable, SMC Is Different

Every few weeks someone asks, “Is polypropylene plastic recyclable?” The direct answer is yes. The practical answer is “it depends on your local recycling stream and the product itself.”

Polypropylene carries resin identification code 5. In theory, it's recyclable. In practice, I've seen curbside programs favor #1 and #2, and contamination can ruin a batch. I don't have hard data on acceptance rates by city, but I've managed this long enough to know that “recyclable” and “actually recycled” are not the same thing.

Polypropylene is a thermoplastic, so it can be melted and reprocessed. That's why it gets more attention than thermosets. SMC, once cured, can't be remelted. Some manufacturers use reclaimed SMC as filler, but it doesn't go through a simple recycle-and-remold loop. According to ASTM D4101 (astm.org), polypropylene injection and extrusion materials are classified by property profile, but that standard doesn't promise any particular recycled content.

If you have a hard recycled-content requirement, polypropylene is usually easier to document. But if the part is under constant load or high heat, PP may not survive, and a “recyclable” part that fails in six months isn't a win. That's the tradeoff. If someone brings me an SMC products catalog and asks whether it's polypropylene, no — SMC isn't PP. Different material, different life cycle.

How to Tell Which Scenario You're Actually In

The easiest way to choose is to answer one question before you look at any material data: what is the actual failure you're trying to prevent?

  • If the request has a part number, a stock size, or a clear replacement date, you're in Scenario 1. Start with stock shapes or a catalog.
  • If it has a drawing and the part doesn't exist yet, you're in Scenario 2. Compare SMC and PVC on heat, load, chemical exposure, and volume.
  • If the first question is “does it need to be recyclable?” or “what happens at end of life?” you're in Scenario 3 — but only after you confirm the mechanical requirements. Don't let recyclability be the only spec if the part won't survive the job.

If you're not sure, ask the supplier what failure they're trying to prevent. A good molder will ask about temperature, load, chemicals, and tolerance. If they don't ask any of that, that's a red flag.

No single material can solve every problem. If you need a part quickly, stock items like nylon strainers and nylon rods can keep things running. If you need custom performance, SMC is often worth the tooling. If you need recyclability, polypropylene is the simpler conversation. And when time is tight, buy the certainty. A rush fee is easier to explain than a delayed production line.
