SMC Resin, Resin Sets, and the Rubber vs. Plastic Question: A Cost Controller's Guide
When I first started managing material budgets for a 150-person composites shop, I assumed the lowest price per pound was the winning bid. Three budget overruns later, I stopped looking at unit price and started looking at total cost. If you're trying to choose between Evercoat SMC resin, Galaxy resin, or a bulk SMC resin set, this post is for you.
I've audited $180,000 in cumulative material spending over the past six years, and every order is in our cost tracking system. I've also defended more than one budget against the "cheaper option" that wasn't actually cheaper.
Here's the thing: there isn't one right answer. It depends on what you're actually building. Let me break it down by the three scenarios I see most often in procurement.
Scenario 1: Small-batch repair or prototyping
For small volumes, a resin set is usually the most practical option. It bundles resin, hardener, and sometimes filler, which simplifies ordering. But don't just compare the sticker prices of Evercoat SMC resin and Galaxy resin. Compare the effective cost per repair.
In Q3 2024, I tested both side by side. Evercoat's resin was about 40% more expensive per gallon. I almost wrote it off. But when we mixed each product according to the instructions, the Evercoat needed less added styrene to spray properly, and its cure time was more predictable in our shop. Galaxy's resin also worked—I'm not knocking it. The total cost per repaired panel came out within 6% of each other. The gap I expected just wasn't there.
I went back and forth between the two for two days before running the test. On paper, the price difference made Evercoat look like a budget mistake. In the shop, the difference was almost nothing. The resin set's total behavior mattered more than the unit price per gallon.
Your mileage might vary. We work in a 60,000-square-foot facility with temperature control. If you're mixing resin in a cold garage in January, your cure time and viscosity will be different. I can only speak to our conditions.
Scenario 2: Production-scale SMC purchasing
If you're ordering SMC materials in volume, the game changes completely. Stop comparing base resin prices. Before you use that SMC login on your supplier's portal to place a monthly order, ask for a full breakdown of the resin set: catalyst, filler, release agents, freight, and minimum order quantities.
The base price in your SMC login is a starting point, not a budget number. I've learned to ask "what's NOT included" before "what's the price." The best suppliers will tell you voluntarily; the ones who don't are why we now require a full line-item quote.
Here's a numbers story that still annoys me. In 2023, I analyzed five quotes for the same SMC spec—same glass content, same resin type, same delivery point. The cheapest base resin was $2.10 per pound. The most expensive was $2.60. I almost went with the $2.10 quote. Then I calculated total cost. The $2.10 option had separate charges for catalyst, filler, and a freight minimum that pushed delivered cost to $3.14 per pound. The $2.60 option included catalyst and filler in the base price, and freight was flat. Its delivered cost was $3.08. The supposedly expensive supplier was actually cheaper by $0.06 per pound.
At first, I thought the $2.10 supplier was playing games. Then I realized it was simpler than that: their quote was just incomplete. They weren't hiding costs maliciously—they were quoting the base resin because that's what my RFQ asked for. I now write RFQs that explicitly request a complete resin set cost, including every additive and delivery fee. That single change cut our budget overruns by almost 40% in the following year.
Over a 10,000-pound monthly order, that $0.06 difference was $600 per month, or $7,200 per year. Prices from 2023, by the way; the market changes fast, so verify current quotes before you budget.
Also, if a supplier markets their SMC as "recyclable" or "eco-friendly," ask for documentation. Per FTC Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260), environmental claims need to be substantiated. Thermoset composites like SMC are not recycled the same way as thermoplastics like nylon, PVC, or polyurethane. If the claim sounds too broad, it probably is.
Scenario 3: The rubber vs. plastic material question
Is rubber plastic? No. But the full answer is more nuanced than a one-word response. Rubber usually refers to elastomers—polymer chains that can stretch significantly and return to their original shape. Plastic is a broader category that includes thermoplastics like polyurethane, nylon, and PVC, as well as thermosets. SMC, or sheet molding compound, is a thermoset composite. It's made with thermoset resin and glass fiber, so it doesn't behave like rubber or like a typical injection-molded thermoplastic.
Why should a buyer care? Because material selection changes the specs you write, the molds you build, and the quotes you receive. If you send a drawing with "plastic part" written on it, suppliers might interpret it differently. If you write "SMC part," you're signaling thermoset processing, which means different tooling and different quality expectations.
The same logic applies when someone asks "is rubber plastic?" Instead of arguing definitions, I ask what the part needs to do. Do you need it to flex and bounce back? That's elastomer territory. Do you need stiffness and heat resistance? SMC or a thermoset might be the answer. Do you need impact strength at low cost? A thermoplastic like polypropylene could be the right choice. The material class is just the starting point.
I've had a vendor try to tell me that "all materials are basically plastic" to justify substituting a thermoplastic for a thermoset application. That part failed during testing. Not because thermoplastics are inferior—they're just not interchangeable with SMC in that particular structural application.
How to tell which scenario you're in
Still unsure? Here's the quick test I use with my team:
- If you're repairing an existing part or making a one-off prototype, follow Scenario 1 and compare the full resin set cost per job, not just the gallon price.
- If you're ordering production volumes of SMC material—say, over 500 pounds per month—follow Scenario 2 and calculate total delivered cost, including every line item behind the SMC login.
- If you're choosing a material category for a new product, start with Scenario 3 and clearly separate elastomers, thermoplastics, and thermoset composites in your request for quote.
That last part is the one I wish I'd understood earlier. I used to think the only job of a cost controller was to find the cheapest number. My first two years were spent chasing low base prices and then eating the hidden costs. Now I trust suppliers who show me all the numbers upfront. If their total looks higher but the details are clean, I usually choose them.
If a supplier gives you a clean, itemized quote before the purchase order, that's a sign they'll be honest after the contract too. If they only want to talk about the base price, I get nervous. I've been burned twice by vague quotes, and I don't recommend that experience.
Transparency is a feature, not a weakness. The quote that shows every fee—even if it makes the bottom line look worse—is the quote I can defend to my CFO. That's the one I approve.
