Plastic Battlegrounds: An FAQ on SMC Products, PVC Connectors & Polyurethane Foam

I’m a purchasing administrator for a mid-sized manufacturing company—about 180 people across three locations. I handle most of the plastic parts and materials we buy: custom SMC components, PVC connectors, flexible polyurethane foam, gaskets, and enclosures. That works out to 60–80 orders a year and roughly $600K across a dozen or so vendors. I report to operations and finance, so my buying decisions get measured on lead times, technical specs, and whether the paperwork is clean.

I’ve been in this purchasing seat since 2020. “Plastic battlegrounds” is not an exaggeration. Every material supplier tells you their grade is the best, prices shift between quote and purchase order, and parts that look identical can behave very differently. Here are the questions my internal team asks me, and the ones I think any buyer of SMC products, PVC connectors, or polyurethane foam should ask too.

1. I need a custom SMC product. Where do I even start?

Start with a CAD file or drawing. SMC stands for sheet molding compound, and it’s a glass-reinforced thermoset material. It’s compression molded under heat and pressure in a matched metal die, so it doesn’t behave like a typical injection-molded thermoplastic.

That distinction matters more than people think. SMC product designs need enough draft, fairly consistent wall thickness, and planning for where the mold flashes. In 2021 we sent a part to a mold shop without enough draft angle. The first supplier didn’t mention it until after first samples, then asked for a $2,000 tool rework. The second supplier caught it before we cut steel and explained why. Guess which one got our next jobs?

Before you ask for a quote on any custom SMC product, know the operating temperature, mechanical load, exposure to chemicals or weather, and the finish or marking you need. A specialist will ask about those. If a salesperson tells you “we can mold anything” without asking a single question, that’s not confidence—it’s a warning.

2. How do I choose between SMC, PVC connectors, and polyurethane foam?

From the outside, molded plastic parts can look almost identical. The reality is that differences show up only when you put the part under heat, load, or chemicals.

SMC is strong, stiff, and dimensionally stable, so it’s a good fit for large housings, panels, and structural parts that see outdoor or high-heat conditions. PVC connectors and PVC parts are thermoplastics: easy to process, cost-effective for pipe, conduit, and fitting jobs, resistant to many chemicals, but they soften well below SMC’s temperature limits. Flexible polyurethane foam is a different category entirely—it absorbs, cushions, seals, and insulates, but it won’t carry structural loads like a rigid composite.

I know buyers want a simple answer, but the right material depends on the application. You can start with three questions: How hot will it get? What chemicals will touch it? Does the part carry load or just connect things? After that, a good supplier can give you an honest recommendation.

3. Where can I buy polyurethane foam without getting burned?

You can buy polyurethane foam online from marketplaces and general suppliers. The problem is that “polyurethane foam” isn’t one product. Density, firmness, compression set, and flame rating can all change if you’re not specifying them.

Example: I once bought flexible polyurethane foam from a low-cost source because it was about $300 cheaper than our regular distributor. It arrived without a datasheet and with a strong smell. Density varied across the block, and the production supervisor rejected three sheets out of twelve. Replacement freight and lost labor cost us roughly $1,800. We saved $300, but we spent $1,800. I still remember that invoice.

Where to buy polyurethane foam? Start with a foam fabricator or plastics distributor that publishes spec sheets and will send samples. A small sample cube can go in an envelope. According to USPS pricing as of January 2025 (usps.com/stamps), a 1-oz First-Class letter costs $0.73; a 1-oz flat envelope is $1.50. Shipping cost is not a reason to skip sampling. If the supplier can’t produce a spec sheet or a sample, cross them off your list.

4. Can I get an SMC logo or part mark molded into the part?

Yes. If you need markings that survive weather, washdowns, or years of handling, mold them in. The typical choices are debossed (recessed) or embossed (raised) logos and text, cut into the mold surface. You can also add serial number blocks if you need traceability.

We added a custom logo and part number to a molded enclosure in 2023. The engraved cavity insert cost about $1,200 and added a week to tooling delivery. I went back and forth on it. The upside: permanent markings with no secondary pad printing, no adhesive labels, nothing to peel off. The risk: if engineering changed the logo after the tool was cut, we’d pay to rework the insert. We asked ourselves if $1,200 was worth it for a part going through chemical washdowns, and it was. After two years of cleaning and handling, the mark still looks brand new.

If your design isn’t final, consider secondary marking first and move to an in-mold SMC logo once the design is locked. That way you’re not paying for engraving twice.

5. What should I check before buying PVC connectors?

First, know what you’re actually buying. PVC connectors covers anything from electrical conduit fittings to plumbing couplings and solvent-weld joints. Each one has its own standard. For pipe and fittings, you need to know the schedule (Schedule 40 vs 80), pressure rating, and chemical compatibility. For electrical connectors, look for the right UL listing and temperature range.

Second, don’t assume all PVC compounds are the same. In 2022, a vendor substituted a lower-cost PVC compound on a batch of connectors we use on an outdoor line. They looked fine when they arrived. Three months later, several cracked in cold weather. The certificate of conformance showed a different formulation than the one quoted, but nobody had checked it. That mistake cost us about $1,400 in replacements and two lost production days. We didn’t have a formal material substitution sign-off process back then. Now we do.

These days I ask suppliers to confirm in writing that the material formulation won’t change without our approval. It’s not about being difficult—it’s about making sure the part you get is the part you qualified.

6. What are the red flags when evaluating plastic suppliers?

I’ve developed a short list over five years, and the first flag is usually a salesperson who says they can do everything with no technical questions. Specialists know their limits.

Other red flags: no datasheets on request, no certificate of conformance, prices that change after the order is placed, and a reluctance to explain their material grades. I also watch for paperwork problems. One vendor shipped the right parts and delivered on time, but couldn’t produce a proper invoice for the order—no tax ID, handwritten receipt only. Finance rejected the expense, and I had to explain it to my VP. The reorder and related costs ended up close to $2,400. Process smoothness matters as much as part quality.

7. Do I really need datasheets and certificates for every order?

Short answer: yes. A certificate of conformance isn’t just corporate overkill. It’s a record that the material shipped is the material you specified, from a tested lot. If something fails later, you can trace it. If you don’t ask for it, you won’t have it.

The question buyers don’t think to ask is about environmental claims. In today’s plastic battlegrounds, sustainability statements are a selling point: recyclable, contains recycled content, low carbon. Per the FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov, 16 CFR Part 260), environmental claims have to be truthful and substantiated. So ask the supplier for the evidence behind a claim like “recyclable.” Does a recycling program for that material exist where your customers are located? If the answer is “well, it’s technically recyclable,” that’s not proof.

That question separates credible suppliers from the rest. The ones who send third-party test reports and honest explanations earn the next order.
