Can I Microwave Plastic Containers? What a Quality Manager at an SMC Company Checks First
I'm a quality and compliance manager at an SMC composite and custom molding company. Over the last four years, I've reviewed roughly 200 first articles a year before they go to customers. A nylon 66 part might be strong and heat-resistant in its natural state, but a colorant or a mold release can change the surface behavior in ways the resin datasheet won't tell you.
I think about this in terms of boundaries. According to USPS Business Mail 101, a letter has to be at least 3.5 by 5 inches and no more than 6.125 by 11.5 inches, with a maximum thickness of 0.25 inch. Go a little thicker, and the same paper is classified as a large envelope. The object didn't change; the classification did.
Material selection works the same way. Two batches of SMC may both be called “sheet molding compound,” but one can have different glass content, filler, or thickener. That's why in our SMC catalog we list grades. The name tells you the family; the specification tells you the part.
The Deep Problem: Names Hide Differences
This is the deeper issue most buyers don't see. The cost of a failed part isn't just the rejected batch. It's the engineering time, the meetings, the expedited samples, the customer's delayed launch. When I audit a year of rejections, the common thread isn't a careless shop. It's a careless assumption.
I knew I should confirm the exact flame-retardant grade before we placed a 50,000-unit order. But “same as before” seemed fine. Then the certificate of analysis didn't match the UL marking on the part. We had to re-test, re-certify, and explain the delay. That is the real price of a vague spec.
In our Q1 2024 quality audit, four of eleven rejected first articles traced back to incomplete material callouts. That's frustrating. You'd think a written drawing with a material name would be enough. But material names are interpreted differently at each step: the buyer, the planner, the press operator, and the inspector can all read the same line differently.
When People Search PVC Blinds and Nylon Taslan
Let's be honest about the boundaries. Our company doesn't make PVC blinds or nylon taslan fabric. If that's what you're actually buying, you're probably not looking for a compression molder. That's not a flaw in the material; it's a mismatch of process and application.
PVC blinds are usually extruded. We mold reinforced thermoset SMC and thermoplastic nylon parts. A specialist in PVC profile extrusion will know more about corner cleanup, UV stabilization, and blind geometry than I ever will. If someone asks us to produce PVC blinds, the most useful thing we can do is say so.
Does that sound like we're going to say no to every project? No. But it's the same discipline that makes a supplier trustworthy: a vendor who says “this isn't our strength” earns trust for everything they do take on.
Nylon taslan is another good one. Taslan is a type of yarn or fabric finish. We don't weave or sew fabric. If you need a molded nylon bracket, housing, or bushing, we can talk about nylon 6 versus nylon 66, glass-filled versus unfilled, and how moisture absorption affects part dimensions. If you need a roll of taslan fabric to manufacture bags, we are not the right stop.
The important thing isn't whether you worded the search perfectly. It's whether the supplier asks a follow-up question before quoting you.
The Cost of Guesswork
Here's a story I keep going back to. A customer sent us a drawing for an SMC component and wrote “same as sample.” The sample looked fine to the naked eye. But it had been molded from a prototype grade with a different shrinkage. The production grade we selected based on the drawing had a slightly different profile. The first article didn't fit their fixture, and the rework cost about $22,000 in secondary machining and expedited shipping.
In hindsight, I should have asked why the sample grade wasn't specified on the P.O. The drawing said “SMC.” That's a family, not a grade. A $22,000 secondary operation had to be redone because a vague phrase made it through two review meetings.
I also assumed their drawing was current. It wasn't. Their internal spec had changed, but the drawing didn't. Now I never assume “same as last time” means anything until I've seen the material data sheet and the certificate.
The most frustrating part is that this is preventable. In my experience, most of these issues are preventable with clear specs. But you'd think a written drawing would be enough; it rarely is without context.
What Good Material Communication Looks Like
The fix doesn't require you to become a materials engineer. It requires a few intentional steps:
- Describe the application, not just the material. “Nylon bracket” is a starting point. “Nylon 66 bracket that holds a sensor near a hot motor and sees coolant mist” is a specification.
- Include the heat profile. Does the part see continuous 180°F, or a short burst at 350°F? That difference can push you to a different SMC grade.
- State the regulatory or safety requirement. Food contact, flame rating, outdoor exposure, shock resistance—write it down.
- Ask which test method was used. A flexural modulus from one standard may not match the same value from another. If you don't ask, you'll compare numbers that were never apples to apples.
This might sound like extra work, but it saves money. It saves the phone call after the first article looks wrong. It saves the $22,000 redo. It saves the internal meeting where someone has to ask, “What did we actually approve?”

Short version: if the container doesn't say “microwave-safe” on the label, don't assume. Check the bottom, check the lid, and when in doubt, use glass or ceramic.
If you're choosing a plastic container for repeated food reheating, many containers are made from polypropylene (PP). But a PP label alone isn't a guarantee. Different wall thicknesses, lids, fill levels, and food compositions all change the conditions inside the microwave. A container that handles one reheating cycle might deform after five.
If you have a specific part in mind, ask the manufacturer for the migration test data and the resin supplier's documentation. That's the actual proof. The word “plastic” was never a spec—and neither was the color.
